Steps to a private pilot license: the regs
Not long ago, I realized that it was difficult to squeeze in all of the regulatory requirements for solo in a student’s logbook. I developed this spreadsheet that literally copies from the relevant part 61 regulations for private pilot.
I like to create a new spreadsheet for each student and check off the boxes as we finish them. Before solo, cross country solo, and checkride, I print the appropriate sections and review them with the student. I sign it stating that the information is accurate and the student signs it stating that they agree they have received the information. It becomes part of their training record at that point.
Following the checklist below won’t guarantee that your student will be a safe pilot, or proficient, but it will be a step towards making sure that you have checked all of the boxes spelled out in the regs for your student.
